HiveBio Accelerator Pilot
Supporting the Next Generation of Life Sciences Founders
In 2024, WorldUpstart Impacts launched the pilot of the HiveBio Accelerator, a program designed to support underrepresented founders in life sciences and medtech in the Greater Philadelphia region.
The program was made possible through funding of $250K from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which invested in building stronger pathways for diverse innovators to access capital, mentorship, and commercialization expertise.
WorldUpstart Impacts served as the grant recipient and program architect, designing and delivering a structured accelerator to help founders advance their companies toward funding and market readiness. The pilot was implemented in collaboration with ecosystem partners HelaPlex and LaunchBio, whose contributions helped strengthen community engagement and founder outreach.
Program Structure
The HiveBio Accelerator pilot ran for nine months and provided participating companies with intensive support across the key areas required to build and fund life science ventures.
The program included:
- 26 expert-led sessions covering regulatory strategy, commercialization, fundraising, intellectual property, and business development
- 180 one-on-one mentoring sessions with industry leaders, investors, and experienced entrepreneurs
- Peer-to-peer founder sessions, designed to strengthen collaboration and shared learning
- Access to a national network of investors, mentors, and life sciences experts
- Preparation for major industry milestones, including grant submissions and investor showcases
The curriculum was designed to build knowledge incrementally, helping founders move from early-stage concepts to a more fundable and strategically-positioned ventures.
Cohort
The inaugural HiveBio Accelerator cohort included 10 early-stage companies led by founders from historically underrepresented communities. These companies are innovating across diagnostics, therapeutics, digital health, and medical technologies.
Program Outcomes
The pilot results demonstrate the potential impact of targeted support for underrepresented innovators in the life sciences.
During the program:
- $3.65 million in grants and investment funding was secured by participating companies
- 80% of the companies raised funding while participating in the accelerator
- 100% of founders reported increased confidence in their entrepreneurial capabilities
- Participants significantly expanded their networks of mentors, collaborators, and potential investors
Based on the initial philanthropic investment from the Knight Foundation, the program generated an estimated 14x return on investment in funding raised by participating companies.
Looking Ahead
The HiveBio pilot demonstrated that intentional, founder-centered accelerator design can produce measurable outcomes for underrepresented innovators in complex industries such as life sciences.
The lessons learned from this pilot continue to inform the development of future programs that support diverse founders and strengthen regional innovation ecosystems.
